Quilting boasts utility and beauty - valued as much for its toe-warming on your couch, as its presence on a museum wall. It connects us to our past while continuing to innovate and reflect modern times, which perhaps is why it continues to be a meaningful pursuit today. In this beginner class, we will cover the basics for getting started making a quilt from scratch. Choosing fabrics and patchworking the top, quilting the layers, and binding the edges, students will be hands-on with rotary cutters and sewing machines. We will create color stories, experiment with unusual fabrics, and discuss ways to embed personal symbology into our stitches. Along the way, we will share stories, look at pictures, and engage in the rich history of Appalachia’s quilting past, while simultaneously participating in its present.
